HISTORY
The year was 1965. Syd Barrett, Bob Close, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Rick Wright joined a band called Sigma 6. When Sigma 6 split up, Barrett, Mason, Waters, and Wright still stuck together. They played under many different names including: The Architectural Abdabs, The Meggadeaths, The Screaming Abdabs, and T-Set. Later on, Syd thought up the name, The Pink Floyd Sound, which was inspired by two blues performers Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. In 1967, the band released their debut album, "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", under the name "The Pink Floyd". For their sophomore effort, "Saucerful of Secrets", they dropped the word "The" and became known as Pink Floyd. Before Pink Floyd released "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", the band released a handful of singles. Syd had become quite involved with the then-legal substance, LSD. Syd was unable to handle the pressure of being famous, so the Floyd hired his old friend, David Gilmour, to play rhythm guitar. It is said that Syd's condition was getting worse and worse, so one night the band just left him and Syd never worked with the Floyd again. The band released a handful of albums including "More", "Ummugumma", "Atom Heart Mother", "Relics", "Meddle", and "Obscured by Clouds" before they finally hit it big. Pink Floyd had released "Dark Side of the Moon", which sold 28 million copies so far. "Dark Side of the Moon" still sells at a rate of a million copies per year today, 26 years after the album was released. Two years later, they released "Wish You Were Here". Then they released "Animals", and "The Wall". Tensions had grown between Waters and Wright, and Waters threatened to fire Wright after "The Wall" tour. The Floyd's next album, ironically titled "The Final Cut", was recorded without Wright. Afterwards, Waters had left the band and took legal actions against the rest of the band for rights for the "Pink Floyd" name and the publishing rights. Unfortunately for Waters, he lost the legal battle. In 1987, Gilmour and Mason regrouped as Pink Floyd and released "A Momentary Lapse of Reason". Wright soon after rejoined the Floyd for the world tour. In 1994, Pink Floyd released theyre latest studio album, "The Division Bell". Soon after, "Pulse", which consisted of live performances taken from the Divison Bell tour, was released. |
